Before Sunrise

This series started off with a bunch of color studies and developed into a series of almost minimalist paintings. The theory is that if you create a horizontal band of colors across the painting, color relationships alone will determine representation. Whether one band looks like sky, another like sea, and another like sand is a product of color relationships alone. Good drawing can be an impediment to good painting. Relying too heavily on drawing in figuration can be a crutch when afraid to let color create images.

When I was in school the two major modes of painting were painterly realism and minimalist abstraction. Even though I fell into the representational camp, I always admired minimalist painters such as Kenneth Noland.
