Welliver told me he had taught me all he could teach me and that I should go to New York and hang around with some "hard-nosed young Painters."
I took a year off from school and stayed in Philadelphia. I tried to put the spontaneity of the ocean paintings into abstract paintings.
The result was a forced spontaneity and some miserable paintings.
